Counters to the Anti-Stuart Littleists’ Main Points
Evidently there is a somewhat recent trend around of expressions of virulent hate towards the titular character of the children’s franchise Stuart Little. However the things people have been saying are simply blatantly meanspirited with little to no basis behind them even really, and I am here today to explain why I think that this wave is nothing but a cruel hate campaign .
First things first the main argument; that it is cruel to the other children at the orphanage to witness a rodent being chosen for adoption over them, real human children that are orphaned also, and the implication that this is an injustice that these children felt, as per the Joke. Well, you see, already this entire argument holds no water:
- Right off the bat in the establishing Adoption scene in the 1999 movie, Stuart’s first lines are of him greeting the Littles and subsequently hyping up several of the other children at the orphanage. He points out charm points in many of his fellow orphans, in an attempt to swing the Little’s interests toward them, and questions them on what they are looking for and provides corresponding advice.
- AT NO POINT HERE does he outright ask or even really try to swerve the conversation towards wanting to be favored for this, he is moreso resigned to not having a chance of getting adopted here and is fine with that, he is just excited on behalf of one of his friends soon getting their very own parents. I do not believe he dwells on this overly much even, and even if he does a little, that’s where the next point comes in:
- HE’S A CHILD same as all the others at the orphanage. He’s allowed to be sad about feeling he is not a suitable candidate for adoption. Also he’s just really sweet and nonchalant about it anyway he is recommending a bunch of other kids and not listing off any of his own charm points in the process. Probably he believes he has none really.
- HE LITTLE’S ARE ACTIVELY DISCOURAGED FROM ADOPTING STUART BY ORPHANAGE STAFF. The one person shown to be adverse to the idea of the Little’s even adopting Stuart as a part of their family in the first place is the lady working at the Orphanage that the Littles are consulting. And no, it isn’t on behalf of the human children either, because she specifically points out that this decision will likely be unfavorable for the Littles due to the difference in species, and points out that there will be difficulties and this needs to be thought through but she doesn’t to my memory really even put it in a caring way its just kind of mean the way it is said.So the cards are just kind of utterly stacked against Stuart from the get-go; he has little confidence and is resigned to this low self-esteem, believeing he isn’t as worthy of being adopted as others, a point that those of you online spreading this rhetoric of Stuart being undeserving continue to perpetuate. He is seen as a problem child due to his species, and parents that do show interest are discouraged from choosing him unlike they would be with most other children.
- THE OTHER KIDS ARE ALL HAPPY FOR HIM AND CHEERING HIM ON WHEN HE GETS ADOPTED. This is a significant detail to point out because besmirchers of Stuart’s name seem to unanimously claim that he is taking something away from the other kids, that there is in-universe bitterness towards him for this, when that is not true. The kids at the orphanage are his peers, his friends, and they are happy for him the same as they’d be happy for any one of their friends finding a loving home. The jealousy they may have is likely no different to that which they’d feel toward another human child getting adopted into a family instead of them. Unless they just really hate the mouse for some reason. Overall Stuart is liked by the other children, or at least, he is not Unliked, as we are never shown the other kids being mean to him.
Really in conclusion what I am trying to get across here is that Stuart is just as deserving of parents and a home as any of the others at the orphanage. While his origin is dubious and his species is unusual and he is an outcast in this sense, it does not change the fact that he is an orphaned child who is lonely. Besides this, he has a kind heart, he is reserved and insecure, he wishes to be liked, to be loved, to have friends, to have family, to have a home. And he is justas deserving of all of those things as any other child, this does not change due to him being a mouse.
It’s fine to dislike him. It’s blatantly untrue to claim he is stealing the chance of a family from anybody, because he is just as deserving of one as everyone else. He also is never meanspirited, he is not callous, he is not selfish. He is a lonely kid trying really hard, often to his own detriment, to fit in. The things people are syaing are just mean and also it makes me sad and so stop please.
Thanks
